Stunning Pair American Victorian Brass Mantle Lustres on Marble w Courting Scene. Each is beautifully cast with a courting scene against flowers and foliage forming the central candlestick shaft, very expressive and well done, full of texture and detail. The base is done in black marble with handsome brown veining, in a double stepped form with a band of tongue and dart décor for contrast. The top portion where the prisms are suspended consists of a band of foliate decoration, with ten spots (twenty total) for prisms. The prisms are beautifully cut with little florette and star designs, and will catch and reflect light gorgeously when a lit candle is in the socle.
This pair of mantle lusters is in great condition. The marble bases are in great shape, with no significant chips, cracks, breaks or repairs, just a little fretting to a couple of corners here and there.
The metal itself is also in great shape, with nice patina and no breaks or repairs, though it does have some old wax drips here and there and could in general use a good cleaning. Some of the prisms have minor chips to the tips or edges, as is very typical with glass prisms of this age, but all are present and have all their parts, with no significant breaks. Each mantle luster stands about 16 1/2 inches tall to the top of the socle, while the bases measure about 6 by 4 inches. The prisms are about 7 1/4 inches long.
