Antique 2pc Set Figural Girandole Ornate Gilt Bronze Brass Bronze Candle Holders with Crystal Prisms. This is a rare, unique and artistic pair of late 19th-century American Cast Brass Bronze Victorian Figural Girandoles Candle Holders. The Girandoles are adorned with 20 Colonial crystal prisms (10 prisms per candle holder) that drip gracefully from 10-leaf bobesches that form a canopy above a young girl and boy, referred to as Virginia and Paul. The story of this young couple (Paul et Virginie) was based on a French novel by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre (1788) and was very popular in the 19. Briefly, 2 childhood friends, who have know each other since birth, fall deeply in love and live in peace and harmony on the French-ruled island of Mauritius.

On the island, they are. Surrounded by wholesome nature and are free of the burdens of modern life. Their idyllic life is interrupted by destiny that ultimately ends in tragedy. To the very end, their everlasting love endures. Made in the USA, the girandoles were often displayed on a fireplace mantel, buffett or side table against the wall.

The cast brass bronze candle holders retain their original patina with evident traces of the subdued dark gilt finish that has rubbed off throughout the years. The metal workmanship is superb with the front finished side in crisp detail. Each girandole is securely mounted on a rectangular creamy white marble slab base. CONDITION: Excellent antique condition with expected age-related wear. It looks like one of the bobesches was repaired professionally some time ago. The crystals are in great shape overall.
