I think one could use this as a service piece for after dinner cigars, one angled out in each of those fluted wires, but of course it would have originally been a candlestick, I'm sure.

I like it as a cigar server, though. This is Charles X (earlier than Napoleon III) and has the telltale brass fringe we see on the very early opaline pieces only. Those made after about 1840 just never had all that extra work on them.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The piece is in remarkably fine condition and is just in from Paris.

Look it over to count how many of the little brass fringe pieces are missing - there are a few but not enough to ruin the appeal on this rare one. Will be such a pleasure to use or to just display this unique old opaline item in your vitrine (or mine).

N ormolu leaf mounted on the handle, raised on ball feet; the brass ormolu framework retains its high gold color (we didn't clean it up) and will present beautifully for centuries to come. Nearly 200 years old already. Measurements are noted on our photos, it is 1.75" tall and holds a 1" dam candle (or 6 smallish cigars) and is 3.25 diameter plus handle. Image Hosting by Ruby Lane.
