MUSEUM QUALITY EARLY 18TH C SHEET BRASS AND WOOD ADJUSTABLE SPIRAL CANDLE HOLDER. STRAIGHT FROM AN OLD CONNECTICUT COLLECTION THAT HAS BEEN PACKED AWAY FOR OVER TWENTY FIVE YEARS. THIS IS PROBABLY THE BEST EXAMPLE OF AN ADJUSTABLE "SPIRAL" STYLE BRASS AND WOOD CANDLE HOLDER WE HAVE SEEN OUTSIDE OF A MUSEUM.

IT IS IN NEAR PERFECT CONDITION WITH ITS ORIGINAL GRUNGY OLD SURFACE AND A FANTASTIC SHEET BRASS ADJUSTABLE STEM WITH THE BEST ORIGINAL ROSEHEAD NAILS. AND AN EXTREMELY RARE EARLY 18TH CENTURY SHEET BRASS ADJUSTABLE ARM "SPIRAL CAGE" CANDLE HOLDER WITH ITS RARE ORIGINAL CANDLE GUIDE. THE ABSOLUTE BEST YOU CAN FIND. THE BRASS STEM IS IN OLD SURFACE WITH THE BEST PATINA. IT HAS 6 ADJUSTMENT SLOTS AND STILL RETAINS ITS ORIGINAL HANGING HOOK AND SEAMED TOP.

IT ALSO HAS THE VERY EARLY ATTACHED BOTTOM DRIP PAN BUILT RIGHT INTO THE STEM. THIS IS A VERY EARLY FEATURE LEFT OVER FROM THE 17TH CENTURY. THE BRASS PART IS ATTACHED TO THE TURNED OAK BASE WITH ITS THREE ORIGINAL ROSE HEAD NAILS. THE TURNED AND STEPPED OAK BASE IS ALL ORIGINAL AND STILL RETAINS AN OLD AND PROBABLY ORIGINAL SURFACE, THOUGH WASHED DOWN FROM OVER 300 YEARS OF USE. THIS IS ONE OF THE RAREST FORMS OF EARLY 18TH CENTURY LIGHTING.

This is a very important piece of EARLY 18TH CENTURY lighting. SHEET BRASS AND WOOD SPIRAL ADJUSTABLE CANDLE HOLDERS are extremely rare, especially those with its original candle guide and hang hook. For a similar example and further details see "THE RUSHLIGHT", "Furniture Treasury", by Wallace Nutting, "Flickering Flames", by Leroy Thwing, and "Fire & Light in the home pre-1820", by John Capall, (see last photo). This candle holder is 12" tall, the base is about 4 1/2" across. Typical wear and imperfections with age as described above.
