Antique Early 1800's cast brass Lion Eagle Shield walk-about candle sconces WOW

These walk-about candle sconces are absolutely stunning! They are likely American or English and signs point to them being made during the early 1800's. The detail on these sand casted beauties is incredible. There are lions on each side of a shield with an eagle on top, which makes me think these could possibly represent a family crest.

The arms were made to fit into slots and could easily be lifted out and carried to light your way to another room or wherever light is needed. The bracket that holds the arms is peened into the sconce backs. Being hand made, the arms don't just go in any slot, they are made for specific slots. I played with them for quite a while until I got what I felt was the perfect look. I have labeled the arms and sconce backs to save you the trouble.

They are sand casted, sand casting is a lost art because it is a very arduous process. Each item casted requires a new mold as every mold is destroyed in the process of casting. They use a master mold to create a mold in sand, the molten brass is poured in the sand mold and after cooling the sand mold is broken away.

Age related wear from many years of use. Also there are some inclusions, these are not considered flaws, this is inherent to sand casting and are considered to be a characteristic attribute. I have collected for over 50 years and really need to start weeding things out. We are empty nesters, and love to travel, go to estate sales, consignment shops and antiquing.
